UBS (NYSE:UBS) Sees Potlatch (NYSE:PCH), Louisiana-Pacific (NYSE:LPX), Weyerhaeuser (NYSE:WY) Missing

Commenting on forest and paper products, UBS (NYSE:UBS) said they see companies in the paper/board business increasing earnings substantially, while the see wood products companies like Potlatch (NYSE:PCH), Louisiana-Pacific (NYSE:LPX) and Weyerhaeuser (NYSE:WY) missing.

UBS said, "Overall we expect a strong earnings pickup (y/y & q/q) for US paper/board firms we cover but a steep sequential decline for wood products cos. We expect solidly above consensus EPS from IP. While we expect much improved (in some cases record) paper/board EPS, we believe consensus estimates may be optimistic for several firms including Temple-Inland (NYSE:TIN) and Meadwestvaco (NYSE:MWV). In wood we expect Potlatch, Louisiana-Pacific and Weyerhaeuser to miss. WY/MWV results will be complicated by special div/media respectively."

Long term, forest products will probably start to pick up as news of the damage from the Mountain Pine Beetle infestation in North America hasn't been widely reported in the media.

The damage has already been done, so it's a matter of it affecting the market significantly, which will then generate the media coverage.

Goldman (NYSE:GS) Says Weyerhaeuser (NYSE:WY) Dividend Good for Stock

On its journey to become a real-estate investment trust (REIT), forest-products company Weyerhaeuser (NYSE:WY) announced it would distribute a special dividend to its shareholders value at $5.6 billion.

“We expect [their] announcement to be a positive for the stock, which has declined 33% since April 23, 2010 versus the S&P 500 decline of 11%, as it removes any uncertainty regarding plans to convert to a REIT. For the long term, we believe the conversion to a REIT will be a positive for [Weyerhaeuser] as it reduces the amount of taxes WY will pay from its core timberland business," said Goldman analysts.

The majority of the dividend will be returned to shareholders in the form of stock.

Investors liked what they heard and bid the company up to a $38.86 close, a gain of $3.02, or 8.43 percent.
