Barrick (NYSE:ABX) Resumes Production at Mine Where 2 Workers Died

Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX) has ramped up production again at its Meikle Mine in Nevada, where two workers died earlier in the month.

Evidently the accident was localized and not spread across the mine, as a vertical pipe broke away from the wall and hit the cage lowering the two miners down into the shaft.

The pipe wasn't a typical pipe one thinks of, but rather one about 2 feet in diameter, which had to have had a lot of force with it when it detached from the wall.

The shaft which took the life of the miners remains closed while regulators continue investigating the accident.

Some miners went back to work last week, according to Barrick, and the rest returned by the weekend.

Remains of Barrick Gold's (NYSE:ABX) Missing Miners Found

Rescue workers have reportedly found the remains of two miners who had been missing since an accident caused to be evacuated from the property run by Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) subsidiary Barrick Goldstrike Mines.

The two workers, who have yet to be officially identified, were in a cage being lowered into the mine when a pipe on the wall broke off and hit the cage.

While it'll take anywhere from three weeks to two months to officially identify the remains, Elko County Sheriff Dale Lotspeich, said, "From an official standpoint, I can't confirm it's the remains of the two missing miners. But realistically, yes, it is. The remains were found in the area where the accident occurred and so we're probably looking at that."

As far as the accident itself, we can't think of the usual idea of a pipe when wondering how that could have done so much damage. The pipe being talked about ripping from the wall is two feet in diameter and used to transport crushed rock and stone.

The Meikle mine is located in Nevada, about 275 miles northeast of Reno.

Miners Missing at Barrick's (NYSE:ABX) Meikle Mine - Feared Dead

Mining giant Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) has two miners missing at their Meikle mine in Nevada, and they are now feared to be dead in an accident on Thursday.

The mine isn't a stranger to tragedy, as three other workers have died at the project over the last 11 years, each one in separate accidents, according to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration records.

A subsidiary of Barrick Gold, Barrick Goldstrike Mines, operates the Meikle mine on behalf of the company.

There wasn't a lot of hope for finding the miners alive, as Greg Lang, president of Barrick's North America Region said, "While we don't have all of the facts at this point, what we do know about the incident is not encouraging."

The missing workers were in the midst of being lowered into a ventilation shaft when the hoist operator said he noticed a "large surge of pressure on the hoist drum," and the mined was immediately evacuated.

Several rescue workers were sent in to search for the workers and investigate the accident, to no avail so far.
