Xstrata (OTC:XSRAY), Anglo American (OTC:AAUKY) Coal Output Hit Hard by Rains

There has been mixed news in the Australian coal industry, as some miners like Xstrata Plc (OTC:XSRAY) and Anglo American (OTC:AAUKY) have been hit hard by the heave rains, while others like Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE:CLD) have managed to increase production during that time.

A lot of data has yet to be reported, so there's a lot yet that needs to come in and be analyzed before the full story and impact is known.

Xstrata has experienced the worst of it so far, have declared force majeure since September 30, 2010 for some of its customers. They also halted shipments of coal from the lower production levels.

Cloud Peak Energy on the other hand has had production increase quarter over quarter by 5 percent, although that represents results from only two of the four mines affected.

FBR Launches Coverage on Cloud Peak (NYSE:CLD)

Saying a growing number of investors in small-cap stocks will consider Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE:CLD) a core holding, FBR Capital initiated coverage on them with a "Market Perform."

"We believe that the PRB is now structurally positioned to better participate in the current coal cycle, both in duration and price parity, than in the first three coal cycles. Cloud Peak operates three large coal mines in the southern and northern PRB, led by an international and multi-commodity experienced management team. The stock has performed extremely well, and, as a result, we are initiating coverage with a MP rating. We believe, however, that CLD will become a core holding for small-cap investors given its large footprint and evolving PRB outlook," said FBR Capital.

Cloud closed Friday at $18.48, gaining $0.20, or 1.09 percent. FBR has a price target of $21 on the coal miner.

Massey (NYSE:MEE), Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE:ANR), International Coal (NYSE:ICO), Cloud Peak (NYSE:CLD) Now Covered by Brean Murray

Brean Murray initiated coverage on a number of coal stocks, including Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE:CLD), International Coal Group (NYSE:ICO), Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE:ANR) and Massey Energy (NYSE:MEE).

Alpha Natural Resources is the top pick in the sector, with Massey coming in right behind them said Brean.

Coud and International Coal were started off with a "Hold," while Massey was initiated with a "Buy."

Brean said, "While Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE:ANR) is our official top pick, we'd have to say Massey is a close second. In our view, the regulatory pressures are largely priced into the stock, so that the risk-reward balance is now favoring investors who own the stock, in our view. The company's growing met coal exposure and leading Central Appalachian position make its assets among the most attractive in our universe."

Massey was among the top performers Wednesday, closing at $33.82, gaining $1.94, or 6.09 percent. Brean has a price target of $39 placed on them.
