Monsanto (NYSE:MON) Sugar Beet Ban Troubling to Farmers

The decision by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White to halt the use of genetically modified sugar beet seeds from Monsanto (NYSE:MON) has many farmers troubled, as the vast majority of sugar beet seeds are now modified seeds.

Judge White even said farmers could just go back to planting regular sugar beet seeds, showing he should stick to being a judge and not attempting to be a farming expert.

Farmers say, "There's not enough seed available in the non-GMO (genetically modified organism) varieties to plant all the acres that would be put into sugar beets."

If the ruling were to stand, seeds would have to be imported in an attempt to find enough to meet the demand in the United States. Seed prices would also skyrocket because of increased demand and lower supply.

Short term this won't have a detrimental effect on farmers and the market, but if it were to carry on too long, next spring planting season could be a disaster.

The ban was put in place by the judge until an environmental study could be completed, but hopes are to allow interim planting while the study is being conducted.

The shortage of non-GM sugar beet seeds is no surprise. This could ultimately happen to all non-GM seeds. When will the public wake up? The madness needs to be halted now before Monsanto, Dupont, etc. ruin our farming industry, our topsoil, and leave us with nothing to eat but corn-fed cows and soybeans. Judge White is right in his decision. The laws regarding genetically modified seeds and related patents need to be redressed.

Anonymous 1 is right. The public needs to wake up. Individuals need to be better informed about Monsanto and more importantly GMO's. I am afraid it may be too late by the time the government gets around to this issue.

I think it's truly telling that the farmers are angry that they're not allowed to plant the GMO seeds, NOT that they're angry that Monsanto and others did not leave enough unaltered seed for them to plant in case this happend. You know, plantation owners were really mad when their slaves were taken away too. Open your eyes. These farmers are now slaves to these companies and it's time we free them. They don't even realize it or don't have the wherewithal to take action themselves. Stand up and fight for what's right, not for what's easy.

Unfortunately many people will have to die before Americans will wake up. We need death, blood, gore and outrage to wake a poisoned, doped up, everyone out for themselves America. The American citizen is the new slave. Corporations are the new first class citizen. So, how does it feel to be a slave......not so good, but i've been here all my life. Just let me die quietly like our Constitution......
