Obama's Unions Hindering BP (NYSE:BP) Cleanup Efforts

Outrage is growing over the Democrats and Obama who refuse to waive the Jones Act, because of it being an election year, in order to get highly sophisticated and effective foreign ships helping in the BP (NYSE:BP) Gulf oil spill.

The Jones Act, which not only needs to be waived, but removed as law in this country, is a draconian law going back to years of prohibition where a foreign ship isn't allowed to enter U.S. waters to do work unless what is called a waiver is implemented so they are able to.

For a foreign ship to be allowed to work in American waters, it must have been built in America, a reference to unions who would throw a tantrum if these ships came in to help clean the environmental disaster the oil spill is.

President Bush quickly waived the Jones Act in order to help the disaster from the wake of hurricane Katrina; the reason Bush is considered better at this response than the hapless Obama has been.

Incredibly and with a straight face, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said this about waving the Jones Act in order to help the Gulf region combat the spewing oil, “If there is the need for any type of waiver, that would obviously be granted. But, we've not had that problem thus far.”

We haven't had that problem so far? Is he serious? That by the way is straight from Obama's mouth, as the White House spokesman is just that: a parrot for the President.

So in Obama's pretense of concern and outrage, he refuses to allow highly advance foreign skimming ships to come in to help in the effort to clean up the oil, protect the environment, and help the region recover quickly from the disaster.

Obama and the Democrats do this in order to placate his union buddies, who would strongly oppose the operations and show little if any concern for what really matters.

Even Democratic Senator Bill Nelson noted the stupidity of the comments, saying, "I believe the orange mousse of oil that is now in Florida’s waters is more than enough evidence that we need to take advantage of every appropriate global resource. Please advise as to whether we are taking full advantage of the offers of assistance from other countries.”

What follows a brief comment and question here, is the definition and details of the Jones Act.

After you read what it is, maybe you can explain just how waiving the Jones Act -- thereby absolving BP of their responsibility and keeping US Oil Rig Workers from being able to get their just compensation from BP -- would have sped up the clean up of BP's mess?!


The JONES ACT:

The Jones Act permits injured seamen to seek compensation for injuries resulting from the negligence of their employers or co-workers during the course of their employment on a vessel.

As any seaman knows, a ship can be a very dangerous place to work.

The Jones Act reflects that reality of maritime work, and a seaman's employer may be liable for even a small breach of duty which contributes to a seaman's injury.

This is true, even where a seaman performs dangerous work while aware of the high risks involved in the work.

In addition to compensation for injuries cause by negligence, an injured seaman may also make a claim against the vessel's owner on the basis that the vessel was not seaworthy.

An employer may also be liable for failing to provide a seaman with adequate medical care.

Jones Act litigation seeks to recover damages for both past and future economic and non-economic losses.

If President Obama suspended the Jones Act OUR OWN Oil Workers could be prevented from getting just compensation from BP!

He'd have been tying the hands of the families who lost loved ones and tying the hands of this nation to hold BP accountable for the damages if he waived the Jones Act.

I see you copied just the part of the act you wanted. Its the part that prevents the use of foriegn ships with foriegn crews that needs to be waived so countries with the equipment to help the clean up can provide that help. But we don't want to mention that this administration turned down help that could have reduced the amount of oil spreading to the coast. We need this to help push usless laws about cap and tax and to justify increasing our taxes.

Ridiculous. 15 foreign-flagged ships are already assisting Gulf clean-up without need for a waiver. U.S.-flagships are helping too and more are available but haven't been called. Foreign interests would love for the Jones Act to be waived so they can take over those precious few U.S. shipping jobs left. Over 97% of U.S. international trade already moves on foreign-flag ships. Why try to choke off the last semblance of our ships flying the Stars and Stripes?

It sounds to me like the president has been paid off by the unions, to protect their interests.
In regards to this "anonymous" about the 15 foreign ships already there.... great ! We need more god damn it !
I believe we need to push forward with the Cap and trade act, but first and foremost we need to stop this freakin' mess people !
Waive the Jones act and let's get to work ! This isn't a permanent thing, it's only established temporarily to allow foreign ships, WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING, to come and help with the cleanup, then it's back in place.
I don't understand the president's reluctance to initiate this, unless he's been paid off by certain politicians who have a financial interest in all this, or by the unions...
What a great country we live in where we can't even come together on an issue.
I'm not very proud to be an American right now.

One other thing about lifting this Jones Act and relieving BP of it's responsibility to claims for the oil rig workers...
I feel very sorry for those workers, but that's BP's responsibility, not ours. What about the VAST NUMBERS of individuals that have lost their livelihood ? BP's employees and the damage done is only a small fraction of what has been lost by the people of the entire gulf region. This is most important.
BP, like every other big oil company is corrupt. They are more interested in profit than compensation. What concerns me is that they have set a fund aside of 20 billion dollars for claims. After all this and the slumping economy, with bonds not worth anything and the stock market on it's ear, does anybody think that BP is worth 20 billion dollars anymore ? They may be worth 7 billion at the most. They are going to go bankrupt after all of this and who will be fronting the bill after all this cleanup.... THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, exactly what we didn't want.
