The first signs of the BP (NYSE:BP) Gulf of Mexico oil spill are about to hit Cuba, as they brace to combat the oil about to hit their coast and affect their tourist industry.
Tarballs have been sighted along the coast of the country, especially the northern coast, where the country is preparing communities in the area to contend with the oil.
Along with the tarballs, oil slicks have been seen about 100 miles northwest of the country, as it seeks the help of Venezuela in how best to limit the damage.
General Ramon Espinosa, vice-minister of the armed forces, said this, "In Cuba, we have had small spills involving tankers on our coasts, but we've never had to confront anything of this magnitude.
"Nonetheless we are documenting and studying. We are preparing with everything in our power."
Hints that they may enlist the help of the United States could provide a unique opportunity for the two countries to work together, although that would take some doing, even in the face of the challenges the island nation faces.
