In the first twelve hours of use, the Q4000 rig employed by BP (NYSE:BP) captured 2,600 barrels of oil, helping BP enjoy the highest amount of oil captured since the oil leak began for a 24-hour period.
The oil collected with the Q4000 rig is flared or burned rather than resold on the market.
During the same 12-hour period of time, the original containment cap collected 7,700 barrels of oil.
In other related news, the two relief wells being drilled to permanently stem the flow of oil are going well, with the first one now down to 15,000 feet, and is reportedly 11 days ahead of schedule; good news for all concerned, including BP.
The second relief well is down to a depth of just under 10,000 feet.
